Shoot 3 - The fire station

On Sunday the 24th November we went down to Rawtenstall fire station to film a few shots for a scene that includes fire engines, sirens and generally a sense of emergency. The firemen were extremely helpful and offered to act out scenes true to life which included driving the the fire engine out of the fire station with all the sirens going off and the lights flashing. In order to film this we went across the road to achieve the full view However with this being such a big job, having the fire engine all set up and driving out of the station etc...We could only do it once so we had to make sure we got it right in one take. We were also able to film more up close shots of the firemen getting out of the engine, opening the hatches and unloading the equipment. For this shoot I was the second camera operator, which we decided to have hand held to achieve a shakiness effect on some of the shots making it appear more true to life. I also offered up my iPhone as an alternative when the behind the scenes hand held's battery died.

The roles and positions of the day were as followed.

Emma - Director and Camera
Tom - Camera
Abigail - Camera
Saqib - Behind the scenes photographer.

Everybody performed their roles really well and to a good standard, I was happy to be operating the camera a lot more this time as I usually focus a lot on sound.
Saqib was there the whole time with a hand held camera to capture all the work the rest of the production team were doing.

The people we were working with being real fire fighters which meant they could be called upon at any moment to rush off and attend a real emergency, because of this, it was vital that we worked as quickly and efficiently as possible to get the shots we needed.

Below is a short mash up of the footage taken on the day, It was made into a sort of promotional video for the Lancashire fire service as a thank you for making this happen for us. We will use some of the footage in this promotional video for the trailer.

The booking of the fire station filming was not a simple one and required a lot of organising before hand to make it all happen. Emma exchanged emails with the head of the fire station to secure the booking. Emma seemed the most appropriate person to do this as this was her contact that she had previously worked with and was able to use this pervious networking experience to secure the booking.

Cafe booking - Tom Bailey

There are a few cut away scenes in our trailer where the three main character's Grace, Charlie and Zara are all sat in a cafe socializing and generally enjoying each others company. although only short these cut aways are very important as they show the character's all together in their day to day life so the audience can see how close they are as friends . This will heighten the drama when Grace is kidnapped. Luckily myself and Abigail are good friends with a girl whose family own a fish and chip cafe/restaurant we decided this is an ideal contact to have so we asked her if it would be possible to use her cafe one morning to film the scenes on the basis that we also bought some fish and chips as a favor in return. She said she was quite happy for us to do this but only on a Sunday as the restaurant is quite busy on other days.

Photograph of inside the restaurant/cafe

The cafe also has large windows at the front creating ideal lighting conditions and a bright sunny atmosphere which we require to connote the happiness in Grace's life and her innocence as at this point she has not been kidnapped and everything is going well for her.

Make up

Make-up
Emma Taylor

The make-up for Clare took approximately around an hour to complete, to make it look as real as possible. I got some pictures of the kind of make-up I would like Clare to have. These images are below.

Post shoot

Since it was only a short shoot (the setting up actually took the longest to do) I edited the second set of graded rushes for these clips. I colour graded the rushes (clips) to have a blue tint, to make the images look cold and uninviting.

Shoot number 2

We are shooting one of the scenes in the boiler room beneath some offices belonging to Emma's Dad. The location was ideal for the atmosphere we are trying to create for the room where Grace is held hostage. The shoot took place on Saturday the 9th November at 10 am when everybody was available. There was no sound required for this scene so instead I took up the role of lighting. The following are the positions taken up by each member of the team on the day.

  • Director - Emma Taylor
  • Camera operator - Abigail Ford
  • Lighting - Tom Bailey
  • Behind the scenes - Saqib Younis
Equipment list
  • Camera
  • SD cards
  • batteries
  • tripod
  • Back light
  • fill light
Everybody performed really well on the day and everybody completed their roles. The behind the scenes filming of the makeup however I had to do myself, as Saqib who was responsible for the behind the scenes filming that day was delayed in arriving by half an hour. The makeup takes a considerable amount of time and could not be delayed so I had to film it there and then without Saqib.

Pre - shoot

When we arrived at the offices early that morning the boiler room was in not fit state for filming in, there were various items that had to be removed from the room such as pieces of wood, a trolly and exercise equipment before filming could commence. This took slightly longer than we had hoped there was only myself and Emma there initially to help prepare the room for filming. However by the time we were ready to set up all the equipment everybody was present and willing to help.

During shoot

During the shoot there were no problems that could not be quickley and easily solved. We managed to keep to schedule which was very important as we all had commitment that afternoon. As this was just a morning shoot we did not need to take as many breaks as we would had it been a full day shoot like we have done in the past however we did make time for a break between shooting the footage and the photoshoot for the poster and publicity.

Here are some behined the scenes photographs taken while working on the second shoot.

Post shoot

After the shoot once again the graded rushes were created to give us an idea of how the shots will look in the trailer when completed.
