Character photo shoot

On Sunday 19th January Abi, Emma and I all gathered in Emma's front room to shoot a photoshoot of our main characters to use as various forms of promotion. These are the final photos of the characters, post editing.

Explosion final

After we went back to film the explosion again on Monday night in the dark, the outcome was much more impressive than in the light, this was the result that we achieved. I assisted Emma in the filming and editing of the explosion as I was very much interested in the making of it and wanted to get involved as much as possible.

The explosion was made possible by a previous contact of Emma's 'Lancashire Militia', a fully qualified explosion company operated by a Friend of Emma's Ted Lewis. Ted is an expert in creating explosions for film and various re-enactments. Lucky Emma had done some film and photography work for the company previously so we were able to call in this favour and film some specialised explosions at the fraction of the price it would normally cost.

The benefits of using a real explosion rather than footage from another film are that it doesn't look out of place with the rest of the footage which is something we felt as a team was very important in creating a realistic trailer. The other huge benefit of having our own explosion is that we can actually feature our main character 'Grace' in the explosion which wouldn't be possible with footage taken from another film.

Explosion testing

These are the rushed from the first explosion scene we shot on Sunday; we plan to shoot the scene again on Monday night when it is dark with more explosives to create a more impressive explosion. Emma, Abigail and I all went down to the Lancashire Militia base in Haslingden on Sunday at 11am. We recorded three petrol bomb explosions in daylight this was beneficial to us as we could see Clare's face for her reaction at the point when the bomb explodes. Below is the first shoot with the explosions done predominately as a test.

Forest scene graded rushes

These are the graded rushes for the forest scene which we filmed on Sunday, I shot the majority of this myself, We deliberately filmed erratically with the camera at some points and used the focus pull heavily to connote the disorientation that the character would be feeling as she has just escaped from the basement and is lost, scared and confused.

The hill scene - Graded rushes

These are the graded rushes from the hill scene filmed earlier today, the shots show the character's Charlie and Grace at a happy point in their relationship.

Shoot 5 - The big one!

On Sunday the 19th January we completed the last our filming. Overall the shoot was a complete success; all filming was completed without disruption which I believe was simply down to good planning and organisation. The days shoot consisted of a photo shoot of the three main characters to use for the website, posters, publicity etc... We also shot the footage for three separate scenes, the explosions scene, the opening scene in the field and the forest scenes. We had also planned to film the cafe scene during this time however unfortunately, due to complications with the booking we had to cut that scene. However we don't believe this will affect the quality of the trailer as it was more of an extra scene that was not necessary in conveying the story that the trailer needs to tell.

Unfortunately, once again one of our team members Saqib failed attend the shoot leaving us a man down and increasing the work load on the rest of the team. However we don’t believe this to have jeopardised the quality of the work we produced on the day.

The explosion shoot

The forest scene consists of Grace running through the forest afraid and alone. We deliberately moved the camera erratically and used the focus full heavily to create the effect of disorientation as believe this is exactly how Grace would be feeling at this time.

Emma and I shooting.
This particular was a focus pull onto the fense, the triod had to be carried and an unusual angle to achieve the desired effect meaning two people were required to shoot, this particular shot, one person to hold the tripod and one person to perform the focus pull.

The photoshoot - Behined the scenes

We performed a mini photo shoot in a make-shift studio set up in Emma's living room. The purpose of this was to provide professional looking shots of the character's that could be then used for promotion of the film in the form of posters, wallpapers, downloadables from the website etc...
