'I Am Number Four' is a 2011 American teen action science fiction film,
the film was produced by Michael Bay and released by Dream Works through
Disney Touchstone Pictures label. The Hollywood Reporter estimated the
budget to be between $50 and $60 million.
In the opening there is a medium shot of
the main character, also there is a non-diegetic music which is loud and
attention grabbing. To add to the sound of the opening scene there is a
non-diegetic voice over of the main character. We see the main
character on the left third according to the rule of thirds.
After this there is an ellipses edit and in cuts to a long shot of the
woods, which then goes on to a very fast zoom into the woods. This is
used straight after the fast zoom there is a point of view shot, the
shot is blurred around the edges trying to indicate that the point of
view which it is shooting from is not human therefore connoting that
this film is based on supernatural events.
After this there is a montage edit it
which it shows load of action and numerous different shots. This part of
the trailer is anchored by the non-diegetic voice over in which it
tells you what is going on in the scene and also this gives background
information but it does not giveaway too much information to ruin the
film and not make viewers to watch it.
Subsequently, there is a usual editing technique in which there is an
unusual editing technique in which there is a blank shot of a pitch
black screen for around about 2 seconds. I believe this is done to show
that this film is not your typical teen drama but has a darker twist to
it.
The next shot is a medium shot of the main character in which there is a
diegetic conversation between to characters. The shot then goes into a
close up of the main characters in which he says “I am number four”.
Then there is a shot of the producing company logo Dream Works, this is
to show that the movie is made to a high quality as Dream Works is a
worldwide recognized film producing company, so this connotes that this
movie is going to be produced at a high standard as a company such as
Dream Works would not fund or budget such a movie if it was not.
Then after this there is a number of ellipses montage edits in which it
goes through the life of the main character, it also explains how he has
to blend in and manages to be this supernatural being and not re veal what he actually is.
Then after there is a moving title page anchoring the trailers and also
creating mystery within the film consequently intriguing the viewer.
Momentarily after this there is a medium long shot of the number four
and a new female character this indicates that there is going to a hero
and a princess and it has already been established before that there is a
character types this is Vladimir Props theory of a film establishing
their roles.
After this there is another montage edit in which it shows the
relationship with the hero and princess. This denotes the relationship
grows and this will lead to being a key factor within the film.
Then after this the trailer becomes a lot more action packed as it then
goes onto a medium shot of number four with an extremely bright light
shining out of his hand.
Then after there is a number of ellipses edit introducing the villain in
full effect. Firstly there is a long shot of three figures in which
their faces are slightly showing however not clearly visible, this
connotes mystery to the viewer. There is also an establishing long shot
of one of the villains on the beach I believe this is done to show that
there is a main villain and not just three as this one will have
superiority over the rest.
The music used is very upbeat and action oriented throughout the action
part of the trailer. After there is another title page mentioning the
credentials of the director saying he directed the movie Disturbia. This
is used to show that if people are familiar with his work they may want
to watch his new film.
There is then a long shot of an unusual explosion of a door that has a
blue flame this therefore continues to add on to the fact that this film
is a supernatural film.
Then after there is a close up of the helper in the movie as he
mentioned the people that have made sacrifices so that he could live.
This connotes the importance of him to the movie and seals that fact
that he is the main character.
Later on in the trailer there is an establishing long shot of a new
character as she is walking away from an exploding house, this connotes
that this character is a destructive person and she is highly dangerous
and is not a stranger to this type of scenario where as number four in a
previous scene is seen panicking at the sight of his hands shining
brightly. Soon after she is introduced using diegetic sound as number
six.
Finally, toward the end of the trailer there are a number of action
shots in which effects have been used. One of the shots there is a long
shot of number six shielding number four who is on floor from what seems
to be a fire blast. This connotes that number four is in trouble and
how he comes out of the situation. Lastly there is a close up shot of
number four shooting a light sort of weapon from his hand therefore
indicating he has control of his powers.
The title of the movie comes at the very end in a very slow and systematic matter.
In conclusion the reason in which this trailer is effective as it gives
the viewer some information however not too much to give away the film.
This film trailer was very good to analyse as it relates to our media
production in which our movie is supernatural and about a teenager who
is in school and a number of unforeseen events leads to a dramatic
coming of age film trailer.
